Golf event helps support homeless veterans

CIRCLEVILLE - Sept. 30 will see the seventh annual "Scramble for Shelter" hosted by PICCA at Upper Lansdowne Golf Course to support the men's homeless shelter in Pickaway County, which primarily benefits homeless veterans while they transition into permanent housing.

"Although PICCA sponsors the event in its entirety, local businesses are sponsoring individual holes around the course," said Becky Hammond, PICCA's director of emergency services. "PICCA employees are putting together lunch, and Coughlin Automotive of Circleville is putting up some really nice prizes for the Par 3 contest."

The Par 3 contest challenges the ability of golfers to successfully make a hole-in-one shot on particular holes, she said, and Coughlin is offering a prize worth the achievement.
The big prize will be a brand new 2012 Chevy Equinox. Other prizes for holes-in-one include a golf trip to Arizona, a set of brand new Callaway wood clubs and a set of brand new Callaway iron clubs. The prizes will be awarded to the first golfer to score a hole-in-one on those holes.

"Coughlin has been really supportive for PICCA programs," said Hammond. "We always have a good turnout for this event. People want to help the program and give aid to veterans. We currently have 12 teams, but we want to have at least 18 to play. We would also appreciate anyone who would like to sponsor a hole."

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 30 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $240 per team, which includes snacks and lunch.

Hammond said they would accept team registrations through the morning of the event itself, although the more notice the better for planning purposes, she said.

Attendance earns CHS sophomore her own ride

CIRCLEVILLE - A warm, sunny day was made even brighter for one Circleville High School student Thursday as her school attendance record earned her the keys to a pre-owned car from Coughlin Automotive.

Elizabeth Burns, a sophomore, won the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT through the A.C.T.I.O.N. program at CHS, where she was one of 140 students entered into the drawing as a result of excellent or perfect attendance.

The winner of the car was announced on May 20, the last day of school for seniors. "I was surprised," Burns said. "I didn't think I had actually won."

Her parents, Barry and Julie Burns, were equally surprised, they said.

"It's funny that Elizabeth won, since she doesn't even have her permit yet, let alone her license," her father joked Thursday, but Burns was quick to point out she is eligible for her permit in August.

Fred Styers, an intervention specialist teacher at CHS and the faculty advisor for A.C.T.I.O.N., said any student who had perfect attendance for the year was entered into the drawing twice, and any student with excellent attendance, missing no more than four days, was entered into the drawing once.

A.C.T.I.O.N., Styers said, is a new program that will replace the long-running Renaissance reward program. A.C.T.I.O.N. is an acronym with each letter dedicated to excellence in academic performance and attendance ? A for attendance, C for completing assignments on time, T for a transition plan wherein each student meets with one of the school's guidance counselors to make plans for life after graduation. I for involvement in extracurricular activities, O for outstanding grades and N for no disciplinary actions.

In addition to giving away the car through a joint effort with Coughlin, Styers said the A.C.T.I.O.N. program also gave away five brand new Dell laptop computers to graduating seniors who had never missed a day of high school.

"Two of those students (Ken and Katlyn Hannah) have never missed a single day of school in their lives, since kindergarden," he said. "We had 140 students eligible for the car prize this year. Next year we're hoping to get that number up to 300."
